Julie Kavanagh
I've spent over 27 years working across the creative industries, from choreography, music and artist development to commercial TV, fashion, sport and major live events.
My career has always been about bringing people together, developing talent and making ambitious ideas happen.Then life took an unexpected turn.
When my two adopted children, both with complex additional needs, were left without suitable education, I stepped away from the industry to build the support they needed.I swapped production crews for a huge team of educators, therapists, medical specialists and professionals across multiple agencies.
Different world, surprisingly similar skills, although the stakes were considerably higher!Now, with my children growing up, I'm coming full circle, bringing 27 years of creative experience and everything life has taught me back into the industry I love.Life in Motion is back. And I've got plenty of ideas.
My commitment to inclusion comes from lived experience, not a corporate policy. As an adoptive parent I've spent years challenging systems and fighting for opportunities that others take for granted.
Care Experienced young people are among the most marginalised, excluded and forgotten in our society. I've seen firsthand how much talent and potential gets overlooked simply because someone doesn't fit the expected mould and can't read well enough to produce a polished CV.
The creative industries talk a great deal about inclusion, but we need to challenge what that actually looks like. An inclusion policy isn't enough, and neither is a breakout sensory room with a sad-looking bubble light and an offer of a mindfulness colouring-in book. Real inclusion starts much earlier, with who's invited in, represented, gets heard and who gets the opportunity to gain a seat at the table.
Life in Motion is a commercial business with big creative ambitions. But as we grow, I have no intention of pulling up the drawbridge behind me. I want my team at Life In Motion to challenge, nurture and have the bloody balls to care.
After all, looking over your shoulder as you grow to see who's missing costs nothing.
